NAIAS PREVIEW: A Gay Hummer?

Get your dirty little mind out of the gutter! I am only poking fun at that the General's oh so macho, oh so republican brand chose to name it's 2008 concept the HX, which if you've ever been to NYC you will notice that it shares the name with HX, a prominent weekly gay events/magazine.

Well it can be gay in another way too. This  ute is a lot smaller, with comparisons already being set with the Jeep Wrangler. Gay boys love small little cars, and I've seen my fair share of frat boys taking the avenue by cruising their versatile Wranglers shirtless, top down, and with maybe even a kiddie pool in the back. Full of more shirtless [frat/gay] boys of course.

Moving on, This is one of the surprisingly few reveals this year that have made its way to the web before their press reveal next week. What you are looking at is a fancy concept version of a future production vehicle most likely dubbed the H4 giving the Hummer brand's current nomenclature. I actually like this car. Fortunately it looks A LOT better than I was expecting. I interned at GM in the fall of 2006 and saw this concept in it's earlier form and have to say that this looks night and day better than the larger than life tank initially planned for reveal. The exterior is pure unmistakable Hummer. Its smaller than the H3 but looks like it could it could kick it's Chevy Trailblazer in drag pantyhose padded butt. Love those huge fender flares, and that Isuzu Amigo tail. Am I the only one [teen in the 90s] that remembers these fondly? This concept actually has several features that my team of interns designed into our 2015 Hummer Silverback back in the summer of 2005, especially in the color and materials. But enough about me, I digress...

I like how they evolved some of the details. Minimal Aluminum trim instead of  the excessive blinged out chrome, and A great matte olive paint that is good for fixing scratches. (since a gigantic 2% of these would actually leave the pavement). Cool too is all the removable pieces: doors, roof, fender flares. I'd really like to see it with these removed, Im betting that it will like a sick mechanicalesque mo-fo not to be messed with.

The interior takes on the minimal aesthetic also with a "stripped-to-the-essence" feel that is inspired by aeronautics. It brings the aluminum to the basic interior. This car is pure function, and I like that. Other features include lightweight configureable seats, a rubberized floor, and cool gauges that are customizable to the driving conditions.

Thats all I can tell from the renderings and what is interesting to me in the GM press release. Hopefully, Ill make my way up to Detroit in the next few weeks and grab my own pics but my schedule is very tight [hello Portland!] this January. Til then, I'll rely on the very reliable autoblog for some incite.
